SOCRATES ESR wins Images of Research Award

Our ESR 5, Stelios Spathariotis, has won an award at the fourth annual Images of Research Competition at the University of Leicester.

Images of Research exhibition, 2019

The competition challenges entrants to communicate their research to both academic and non-academic public in a single image. The exhibition opened at the Fraser Nobel Hall on 27th November 2019 where 26 images out of the 75 total submissions were shortlisted. By the end of the event, this years’ winners were announced and Stelios’ artwork, ‘Girl With a Metallic Earring‘, won the People’s Award, as the most voted image by the public.

The piece demonstrates the cementation process, wherein ionic liquid solutions of gold, silver, iron, tin, nickel, copper and cobalt were painted onto a piece of galvanised steel resulting in spontaneous redox chemistry. Stelios’ work is a highly creative example of the union between cutting edge scientific research and the visual art world. Congratulations!
